A grieving couple retreat to “Eden”, their isolated cabin in the woods, where they hope to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage. But nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse...
“Two years ago, I suffered from depression. Everything, no matter what, seemed unimportant, trivial. I couldn’t work. Six months later, just as an exercise, I wrote a script. It was a kind of therapy, but also a search, a test to see if I would ever make another film. The work on the script did not follow my usual modus operandi. Scenes were added for no reason. Images were composed free of logic or dramatic thinking. They often came from dreams I was having at the time, or dreams I’d had earlier in my life. Once again, the subject was “Nature”, but in a different and more direct way than before. In a more personal way. I can offer no excuse for “Antichrist”. Other than my absolute belief in the film – the most important film of my entire career!”, – says Lars von Trier.
Lars von Trier, born 1956, has graduated the National Film School of Denmark 1983. During his studies Lars von Trier drew the attention of critics with his etude, which was awarded with grand prize in Munchen. 1984 he directed “Element of Crime”. Recipient of major international awards, among them Prix Special de Jury in Cannes for “Europa” (1991), Jean d’Arcy Prize in France for the television production “Medea” (1988) and the Grand Prix in Cannes for “Breaking the Waves” (1996). His major breakthrough with the audience came with the television production “The Kingdom” (1994). Together with Thomas Vinterberg he declared the Dogme 95 manifest, which inspired many European, and directors of the world in 1995. His own contribution to Dogme was “The Idiots” (1998). Trier is also innovator and partner of Zentropa, a multi-faceted and visionary Danish company. For “Dancer in the Dark” (2000) Trier received the Cannes Palme d’Or. Von Trier’s latest major film “Antichrist” (2009), selected for the Cannes Film Festival competition, marks the director’s eighth film to run for the Palme d’Or.
